PISA 2009 Review by Educational Researchers
- How Japanese Education Should Refer to PISA -

The public symposium on the “PISA 2009 Review by Educational Researchers - How Japanese Education Should Refer to PISA -” was held on December 10th 2010, hosted by CRET and co-sponsored by BERD. 222 attendants from various backgrounds, including researchers, educators, students, administrators and media, gathered together. Based on 101 responses received to the questionnaire, more than 90% of the attendees were satisfied with the keynote speeches and lectures, as well as the panel discussion.

The symposium was held just 6 days after the media announcement of the PISA 2009 results on December 7th. The objective was to transmit the perspectives of the researchers. The panel discussion invited vibrant comments from the floor. The symposium concluded that “The cool and calm observation of PISA results is essential, recognizing that some skills are not measured by PISA.” Ranking is often highlighted whenever PISA results are announced. However, we reached a consensus that an objective review of the content of PISA was required. This, we believe, was a significant outcome of the symposium.
